Gray was so excited to start school today.
He had chosen his clothes last night,
which included his "wedding" shirt and tie,
but ended up deciding
to wear his "skate board" (Tony Hawk) shirt instead.
He decided his menu for lunch:
Peanut Butter & Banana Sandwich
Strawberries
Cucumber
Go-Gurt
and a surprise pack of Pringles.
Surprisingly, he chose water over a Capri Sun.
He had enough time to watch one 25-minute show,
which I think helped to calm his nerves.
We decided to give him the option
of having us drive him to school on the first day,
of having us drive him to school on the first day,
or going ahead and riding the bus.
He chose the bus, of course, and broke my heart just a little.
He started yelling to us at 8:20 that he
needed to get to the bus stop.
needed to get to the bus stop.
He was so excited that he didn't even hear us telling him
that the bus wouldn't be here for another 20 minutes yet.
that the bus wouldn't be here for another 20 minutes yet.
So we all trooped outside and took pictures instead.
Grayson was great about including his sister in everything.
I think she would have gone with him if we had let her.
We were so glad that Grandma Linda was still visiting
and could take a picture of all of us.
We finally walked down to the bus stop with
about 8 minutes to spare.
about 8 minutes to spare.
Gray got kind of quiet and just took it all in.
I met a mom that I am determined to become friends with.
Luckily, she has 2 sons right around Gray's age,
so I won't seem too stalker-ish.
The bus came much sooner than I would have liked,
but Gray walked right over and climbed on.
He took the first seat next to an older boy who
lowered the window for him to wave good-bye.
I tried keeping my emotions in check,
but something about putting my baby on the bus
and watching it drive away got the best of me
and a few tears managed to escape.
We needed to drop the snack for Gray's class off at the school,
so Nate drove over and made sure Gray made it ok.
He didn't want Gray see him,
so he quietly asked the student teacher how he was
and then left.
I didn't worry much throughout the day.
I definitely noticed how quiet my house was,
and how much calmer it seemed at what were typically
the craziest parts of the day.
I got more anxious the closer it got to 3:15.
I was so ready to see my boy,
and give him a big hug,
and hear all about his very first day of school.
Scarlett and I walked down to the corner at 3:25.
A bunch of kids got off, but not Gray.
I kind of started to freak out inside.
After a very short exchange with the driver,
I realized that he was on the bus,
but hadn't realized he was at his stop.
I tried
(and still am actually)
to not get too angry with the bus driver
for not helping out a Kindergartner on his very first day.
Luckily, Gray didn't really notice anything,
and came bounding down the steps exclaiming,
"I had FUN!!"
We walked back home and had a snack together.
I tried getting as much information
about his day as I could,
which wasn't as much I would have liked.
He played with some other boys,
but couldn't remember their names,
and his lunchbox came home mostly empty,
which made me happy.
I guess all that matters at the end of the day
is that he's ready to get up
and do it all again tomorrow.
And hopefully I can do it without tears.

I'm sorry I wasn't part of Gray's big day. Such a big boy. I'm very proud of my grandson and my daughter. Lots of hugs and kisses to the B-town Irwins. See you all on the 28th.
Love,
GG
Great pics! I'm so glad he had an AWESOME day! Must be that great pre-K teacher he had! ;)
I love all of the pictures!!! So glad he had a great first day!
Thanks for sharing Kelly, I wish I could have been there but since I couldn't the pictures and details are the next best thing. Grayson will do great in school and maybe each day seeing him off will get a little easier. Love, Great Grandma Katie & Karen
