Horrifying

There were a couple other things I had planned on blogging about today, but I was so shocked by the pictures you are about to see that I felt I needed to share. Let me set this up by telling you that Grayson has been potty trained for over a year now, and sometime over the summer we stopped feeling like we constantly needed to be in the bathroom with him while he was in there. We still check up on him every now and then, but for the most part he's pretty self-sufficient in that department.

So, Nate walked into Gray's bathroom last night and noticed the cover on the nightlight in there had been pulled off, but, for whatever reason, didn't think anything of it.
A little later, after Gray was in bed, I went into his bathroom and realized that the nightlight wasn't on. I reached over and flipped the switch on it, thinking it had just been turned off. When it still didn't come on, I turned on the overhead light and saw this:

I realized that the cover was off, but thought that maybe Nate had taken it off because it wasn't working. At this point, I started to get annoyed by the fact that I had just recently changed the bulb and it was already burnt out. But when I pulled the light out of the outlet, I was shocked to see this:

What I wasn't able to get a picture of is the actual brackets that hold the shade on the lamp. The brackets actually had notches in them where they had been burned by the plug. I was absolutely astonished and called Nate in the bathroom to see this. He obviously didn't know anything about it and was just as shocked. Our best guess at that point was that Gray had to have done something, but we couldn't believe that he wouldn't have said something to us about it.
Nate talked to Gray this morning, and asked him what happened. Gray replied with "Pop! Fireworks!" All I can say is that there was only one time that Gray was in this bathroom on his own yesterday, and was in there for maybe 7 minutes. I can not tell you how horrified at am when I think about what could have possibly happened to my son yesterday. PLEASE talk to your kids about outlets and how dangerous they are. I know that we will be having many discussions about this in the days to come.

OMG... I think I just got a little sick.

It must have scared the CRAP out of him to not tell you about it too.

A similar thing happened to K about a year ago. She was turning off the nightlight in the hallway and started playing with it. I saw a flash, heard a loud POP and then heard her scream and don't think my feet even touched the floor. Her hand was black and our outlet looked similar. I assume she had yanked on it and the bulb blew or something. Scared the bejeezus outta me and her. Now our nighlights are out of reach. Glad Gray is okay. Thanks for the reminder to talk to K again about how outlets are dangerous!!! I had forgotten about our incident too!

Dan mentioned that the nightlight bracket fell across the plug and could have caused that. Gray may have not done much to cause it. Just a little jiggle of the shade. Hopefully it scared him enough to leave it well alone. Glad he's okay!

Hey Amanda~ We actually thought the same thing after we had looked at it. Our only other thought was that he kept turning it on and off continuously, which may have caused something.

What scares me the most is that Gray DIDN'T say anything. Because of that, I'm not really sure it scared him. Time will tell, I guess.

Yikes. Chris never believes me when I tell him stuff like this, so thanks for including pictures. What do you do for a nightlight in their bedrooms where they could climb out of bed and play with it without you knowing? One more reason I'm in no hurry to move Katelyn out of her crib.
