Toddler Antics

Why is it so hard to discipline a toddler? I find myself trying to hide my smiles and snickers behind hands that usually don't really hide anything at all.

As some of you may know, we transitioned Gray to a "big boy bed" about 3 weeks ago. He has been doing really well, up until the past 2 nights. The usual bedtime routine consists of a bath, teeth brushing, pj's, several books, kisses, and "eskimo" kisses, and one final hug before heading out the door. Grayson used to fall asleep within a matter of minutes. Now we're lucky if Grayson falls asleep with in an hour and a half.

Anyways, the past 2 nights I have done the usual books, kisses(of various sorts), and hugs, and then left the room. I then promptly sit down at the computer for what I like to call "me" time(pathetic that I have to use the computer to get it, but that's how it works these days). But 5 minutes into my "me" time, I've been hearing Gray's door start to rattle, or rather, the doorknob starts to rattle. My little wiseguy stands on the other side of his closed bedroom door and tries(unsuccessfully so far) to open the door in order to rejoin the rest of the waking world. And all I can do is laugh. I go to his door, kneel down so that I will be at his eye level, put on my best aggravated face, and open the door. But as soon as I see those big brown eyes looking back at me with a mischievious smile, and hear that little voice say "Wake up?" all I can do is smile and start laughing! What is wrong with me, and why do I think my kid is so damn cute when I know that he knows he's trying to play his mommy? Ahh, toddlers.....

This is how ours hellish decent into sleeplessness started... careful it is a slippery (and tiresome) slope! Only Mr. Matthew CAN open doors - far more frustrating.

Kevin and I both laughed every time but after 2-1/2 hours of it plus 2-3 night time wakings with Matthew at the bed side (FREAKED ME OUT!) it was ENOUGH.

That is when we regressed and are happier, more content parents for it plus Matthew is also happier and more content as well. Might I add he was asleep by 8:45p last night and did not wake up ONCE last night!!! Praise be!

Oh, I am soo happy you are my personal guinea pig on this topic. Of course, Dan and I have been discussing when to transition Kate into a big girl bed, but I think we may wait a little longer. Her fave thing to do in her room is pull each and every book off the shelf, then sit among the array reading outloud to herself. I think if she is able to get out of bed on her own, every morning I will find her asleep among her books!! I'm glad you are blogging...I really enjoy reading them!
